Lot Essay

This commode, with its exotic, well-matched hardwood veneers that exploit the figure of the timber, is typical of furniture made in Emilia Romagna. Exotic hardwoods such as pallissander, kingwood and carubo would be inlaid in patterns that emphasized their elaborate figuring and would often have simple inlaid borders. Several desks and commodes with related inlay are illustrated in G. Manni, Mobili Antichi in Emilia Romana, Modena, 1993, figs. 240, 284, 294, 303-5, and 324.
