Sweeping Central Park views provide a dramatic backdrop for this elegant interior which represents a collaboration between the owner and a prominent New York decorator. The charming watercolor of the living room illustrated here captures the owner's love of neo-Classical themes and presents a twentieth-century twist to the notion of the Grand Tour. For the eighteenth century Mi'lordi, this journey through the noted Roman and Renaissance landmarks was both an educational and social right of passage. Along the way, furniture, objects, sculpture and paintings were collected to be displayed as more tangible souvenirs of their European travels. This carefully assembled selection of primarily Italian and English , furniture as well as objects evokes the prevailing décor in many eighteenth century aristocratic residences. Though often disparate in material and form, they share the common language and iconography of the Classical world. As this collection attests, it is a style that continues to provide a wealth of inspiration.
