The cup painted beneath a band of faux pearls with two pairs of confronting trompe l'oeil cameo portrait heads of Greco-Roman gods, each reserved within an oblong octagonal panel on the claret ground, further gilt at each end with an anthemia between scrolls and centering a lyre within a gilt wreath, a similar undecorated medallion behind the handle, the interior of the cup with a foliate rinceau, the interior of the cup and underside of the saucer burnished gold, the saucer basin decorated en suite but with no cameo decoration

Lot Essay

The present cup is likely that described in the factory sales records as 1 Tasse à thé Coupe 1e [grandeur - sic] fond cornaline camées pierres brillantes, entered in the saleroom ledger on 8 November 1816 with a selling price of 220 francs (Register Vv1, folio 74, No 2).
