Lot Essay

The Griffon breed is a rough wiry coated hunting dog, created in Belgium in the 19th century. These were favoured by Hansom cab drivers as intelligent guard dogs and for hunting out vermin in the stables. See Christopher Payne, Animals in Bronze, Antique Collectors' Club, published 1988, page 226, D71.
