Of octagonal form, the hinged top decorated with a panel depicting figures in a garden scene, surrounded by further cartouches containing animals, the box with three drawers to the front, the sides with brass carrying handles; together with a Chinese black and gilt lacquered games box, inscribed with initials 'J.E.G.' of John Gladstone; three Indian japanned game boxes and counters; and a pair of late Regency giltwood and chinoiserie japanned panelled handscreens

In 1814, when the monopoly of the British East India Company was broken and trade with India and China was opened to competition, Sir John Gladstone's firm was the first to send a private ship to Calcutta, and shortly afterwards to China. As such he began to add items of curiosity including the present lot to his ever-growing collection.
