The Grecian-scrolled Drawing Room sofas, conceived as Roman triclineum couches and raised on palm-flowered stump feet, relate to George Smith's 1805 designs for a 'Chaise Longue' and a 'French Bed …for an elegant apartment' (G. Smith, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808, (pls. 29 and 98).
