A rare example of a fine binding by the leading cabinet-maker in Milan at the turn of the 19th century. Active in Milan from 1854, Pogliani's skill in producing elegant ebony and ivory inlaid furniture met with widespread acclaim, his work winning numerous medals at international exhibitions. William Gladstone had a long and close association with Italy and his academic career and scholarship was recognised by the University of Bologna in 1888 with the award of an honorary degree. The principal universities and institutes throughout Italy are represented here, including Bologna, Florence, Milan, Naples, Rome and Venice.
