Geneva: Barillot et fils, 1739-42. 3 volumes, 4° (239 x 180mm). Titles printed in red and black with engraved vignette, woodcut diagrams in the text, half-titles (some quires browned to a greater or lesser extent, some pencilled marginalia on Q4v and R1r). Later 18th-century diced calf gilt (rebacked).
FIRST 'JESUIT' EDITION although the work was undertaken by two Minims. Valued for its extensive commentary, this edition also contains Traité sur le flux et reflux de la mer by Daniel Bernoully, Colin Maclaurin's De causa physica fluxus et refluxus maris and Euler's Inquisitio physica in causam fluxus et refluxus, three important works on the tides and gravity and all that was written (of importance) between Newton and Laplace.
