a wooden quadrant with markings in red and black, gilt decoration throughout and two cartouches with floral motifs, the front dated 1280 Hijra [=1866] to the upper left corner, the ecliptic in red and the divided horizon in black with gilt markings every 5°, a small diagram of unequal hours to the top right corner, the reverse with an ornate sexagesimal trigonometric grid, in a later carrying case with section for plumb bob -- with a paper sexagesimal trigonometric grid with pasted card cartouche, six lines of manuscript to reverse, radius 4¾in. -- and a paper lunar volvelle diam 2¼in., the reverse showing parts of a previous attempt at a 2½in. volvelle.
