BAUHIN, Jean (1541-1613) and Johann Heinrich CHERLER (1570-1610). Historia plantarum universalis, nova, et absolutissima ... quam recensuit et auxit Dominicus Chabraeus. Yverdon: [Typographia Caldoriana], 1650-1651. 2 volumes only (of 3), 2° (380 x 244mm). Additional engraved title page in each vol., woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, numerous woodcut illustrations (some variable staining, browning & spotting throughout). Contemporary calf, spines with raised bands in 7 compartments, lettered in gilt in second and third (rebacked and sometime refurbished). Gesner's proposed Historia plantarum, for which Bauhin contributed many specimens, remained unfinished at his death in 1565, and Bauhin's substantial botanical thesaurus may well have been his attempt to complete it. Cherler's appearance on the title page seems to have been more through his relation to Bauhin (his father-in-law) than for any substantial contribution to the work. Nissen BBI 103. With another botanical work. (3)
