the cartouche inscribed MALBY'S TERRESTRIAL GLOBE, Compiled from the latest & MOST AUTHENTIC SOURCES, Including all the recent Geographical Discoveries, Manufactured and Published under the superintendance of the SOCIETY FOR THE DIFFUSION OF USEFUL KNOWLEDGE, BY THO.S MALBY & SON GLOBE & MAP SELLERS TO THE ADMIRALTY Published at the Globe Manufactory 37, Parker Street Little Queen Street, Holborn London., below this dated Jan.y 1.st 1854 Engraved by CL Malby, the globe made up of two sets of twelve hand-coloured engraved half-gores and two polar calottes, a few minor repairs; the equatorial coloured and graduated in degrees and hours, the ecliptic graduated in days of the month and houses of the Zodiac with their symbols, tropics and arctics shown with broken lines, ungraduated meridian through Greenwich, the oceans with directions of magnetic variation and an analemma, continents with hand-coloured outlines for nation states, towns and rivers shown, outline of supposed Antarctic continent shown (slight cracking to South Pole), graduated brass meridian circle and hour dial, paper horizon Engraved by Cha.s Malby (with one minor repair not affecting text) with degrees in both directions, thirty-two compass points, houses of the Zodiac, calendar and equation of time, mahogany horizon on three turned legs united by cross stretcher

Malby's terrestrial globes are notable for the innovative marking of of the lines of magnetic variation, derived (as a note below the cartouche states) from Peter Barlow's 'Chart' published in the Transactions of the Royal Society in 1833.
