Having returned from his first visit to Madeira in 1840 on which trip he made the drawings for the highly acclaimed Madeira Illustrated, a work that he subsequently published in that same year. Picken was again advised soon after his arrival in England to return to Madeira by his physicians after a bout of ill health. It is from this second visit that this charming watercolour dates
