Please note that this lot is a variant composition of a marble executed by Scheemakers which was paired with a figure of Flora by Laurent Delvaux at Englefield House, Reading, Berkshire (executed between 1723-28). That Scheemakers marble was published by Ingrid Roscoe in 'Peter Scheemakers' Walpole Society Journal, LXI (1999), pp. 163-304, cat. no. 206.

Lot Essay

After arrival in England in 1721, the Antwerp born sculptor was in partnership wih Laurent Delvaux (1696-1778) producing monuments and garden statuary. Scheemakers was particularly active in the mid-18th century notably working at Stowe alongside Michael Rysbrack (1694-1770) producing figures and busts, also at Chiswick House and Rousham.
