Lot Essay

The technological advancement of glassmakers was booming in the Victorian era with hundreds of patents and techniques being introduced in a fiercely competitive market. Colour technology was one of the areas focused upon; Thomas Webb and Sons introduced sixty-five different colours between 1875 and 1898. This 'Peach-blow' vase uses one of their new heat sensitive types of glass over a base layer of cream coloured glass. It became hugely popular in America after the sale of a peach-coloured Chinese porcelain vase from the collection of Mary J. Morgan sold for a record price of $18,000 in March 1886.
