The lid inlaid with a plane and flowering plants with a concealed compartment enclosing the lock and key, the panelled sides inlaid with intricate geometric patterns and the underside of the lid depicting a cabinet maker and apprentice at a saw bench with an array of cabinet maker's tools and a plaque inscribed 'F.M. BALLACH/L.4 L.JANNUAR.1845', with a cup and cover to one side supporting a man with a pennant inscribed Mewe, on an associated mahogany stand
