Lot Essay

The present lot was a gift of Borge Birch from Copenhagen to Herman Krikhaar. Birch wrote a letter dated 22 April 1988 to Krikhaar concerning the present lot: "Dear friend Krikhaar, Thank you for always remembering me, about this painting a little story: I had a one man show of Asger in '53. After 3 days since the opening, we sold 5 paintings. Asger Jorn came in and asked me to come with him to Silkeborg, so we closed the door of the gallery. Just that moment, a man came who wanted to see the show. Asger apologized but he decided that the gallery was closed. Then, outside the gallery Jorn made the present work on paper to stick on the door to make clear to everybody that the gallery was closed. The man wanted to buy the piece and got it for 100 DKR and I made a note on the door that the gallery was closed. Now you have the painting.... It's a good one. Yours, Borge Birch."
