Lot Essay

Vicenzo Spisanelli, also known as Pisanelli, Spisani or Spisano, was a pupil of Denis Calvaert in Bologna. After his apprenticeship he worked in several places such as Ferrara, Modena and Imola. Calvaert himself is known to have painted numerous compositions that are similar to the present lot.

We are grateful to Professor Daniele Benati for suggesting the attribution to Vicenzo Spisanelli on the basis of photographs (written communication, 12 March 2008).
