Professor Werner Sumowski points out that that this picture is very close to the style of Samuel van Hoogstraten (written communication, 4 September 2007). It relates to a group of self-portrait like tronies by the artist from the 1640s, among which the picture of 1644 in the Bredius Museum, The Hague, the picture in the collection of the Fürst of Liechtenstein and the picture formerly in the collection of R. Cook, London are good examples.

Dendro-chronological analysis of the oak panel by Professor Peter Klein of Hamburg University has revealed that the earliest date of the painting could be 1639. However it is more probable that the panel was used after 1645 (written communication, 10 February 2008).
