Lot Essay

The game of 'main chaude', or 'handje-klap' in Dutch, was popular in the low countries in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was often depicted in genre pictures, for instance in a painting by Rembrandt in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin.

Several versions of this composition from Van der Lamen's studio are known. One was in the collection of Dr. C. Richarts, Amsterdam, 1941.
