Château Ausone--Vintage 1986
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A)
Levels: two top and four base of neck
Tasting note: the 1986 is a deeper, richer, and more interesting wine than the disappointing 1985. The 1986 displays a deep ruby/garnet color with light amber at the edge. The nose reveals a concoction of herbaceous cherry and earth-infused fruit with spice and mineral undertones. Still tannic, with the wine's structure and astringency dominating its meager fruitiness, this Ausone is hollow in the middle, with little depth or richness. Even giving it the benefit of the doubt, I cannot imagine this wine ever being better than just above average in quality - if that. Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition # B1 (Jan 1998)
