RARE CASE OF LA LANDONNE FROM THE FIRST VINTAGE IN 1978
Offered in original wooden case
Côte-Rôtie, La Landonne--Vintage 1978
Rhône. Domaine-bottled: E. Guigal
Four slightly corroded capsules. Three slightly nicked labels. Very good appearance and levels
Tasting note: This was the first vintage after Marcel Guigal had unified the La Landonne vineyard on the Côte Brune slope. The wines had been planted in the birth year of Philippe, Marcel's son. Immensely impressive. In 1988 different from his la Mouline. Enormous weight, power, extract. Totally unready at ten years of age. A 5 star wine. Most recently, tasted in the cellars with Philippe: still fairly deep; something of a shock after tasting the '98s and '99s: most unusual, slightly fig-like (Syrah), medecinal liquorice bouquet and flavour; very rich, fairly full bodied, fabulous old flavour, still tannic yet finishing sweetly.
