The paintings and objects they made are naove only in the sense that they are innocent of the distorting lens of classicism thus they are often startling in their originality. The makers were trained craftsmen who might be plasterers or plumbers or sign writers and decorators, possibly itinerant, moving from town to town. These unsung creators were true to their commissions in the sense that if asked to paint a bull for the local farmer the subject was of primary importance, and though the scale might look wrong to our eyes, the commission would have entailed recording the subject to show its breeding potential and to flatter the beast to please the owner. The common thread of all these objects is their charm and their strength of character. The oil painting of a horse signed and dated J. Lamb 1864, is typical of a vernacular painting outside the academically trained tradition where the subject is all important, filling the canvas, no doubt to the pleasure of the owner of the horse. The fish shop sign is a rare survival of the time when every high street would have been hung with such emblematic signs, both painted and carved. The butcher's shop model is one of a group whose purpose is open to conjecture, but because the models are made with great accuracy they may have been used either for instructing butchers or for window display. The Marine embroidered woolwork is one of the largest and most detailed examples known. These sophisticated examples are believed to have been made by ex-mariners living in Naval retirement homes who produced pictures of actual ships, often with great accuracy, to supplement their income. The Welsh love spoon in fruitwood is a large example of the genre of love tokens, often carved with hearts and dates. The weathervane is a large and decorative example of a piece of Folk Art where everything has a practical purpose; this example has a strong decorative appeal as well as being fit for its purpose.
