EARLY FURNITURE The Property of Michael Dann Esq. Michael Dann founded Hatherleigh Antiques in 1979. Early furniture ( pre-1700 ) was always his main focus, complemented by fabrics, ceramics, carvings and metalwares of the same period. His shop in Bridge Street, Hatherleigh, was in the heart of Devon and this naturally meant that much of the furniture and objects to pass through his hands came from local West Country sources, particularly Devon, a traditional area where much locally made furniture has remained in the locality over time. A complimentary smattering of Northern and Southern European furniture and objects from the same period was also available. These various aspects of the business are well represented in this sale of the following seventy items Michael Dann's outspoken views on early furniture and the antiques business has earned him a colourful reputation. His forthright views led him to publish his book 'The English Smile' in 2005; a plea for the furniture of the English Renaissance ( 1490-1590 ) to be taken seriously in its own right . After nearly thirty years in the business, Michael now lives abroad in retirement and the sale of his Bridge Street shop has prompted the disposal of this collection of early furniture and objects.
