The central roundel painted with Adam and Eve, standing on either side of a tree, accompanied by goats and holding a staff, the rim encircled with a continuous floral garland, the reverse painted with alternating peony sprays and mountain tops, rim frits and chips, hairline crack

Lot Essay

See D. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, London/New York, 1978, p.70, pl.27. The authors suggest that the untraced composition is reminiscent of Delftware designs of the 'Adam and Eve' type. Examples of this design are to be found in: Municipal Museum, Arnhem and illustrated in Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chine de Commande, pl. 225; and Hervouët et Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes, no. 7.39, 7.40.
