Lot Essay

See D. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, London/New York, 1978, p.70, pl.27. The authors suggest that the untraced composition is reminiscent of Delftware designs of the 'Adam and Eve' type. Examples of this design are to be found in: Municipal Museum, Arnhem and illustrated in Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chine de Commande, pl. 225; and Hervouët et Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes, no. 7.39, 7.40.
A similar set of three plates were sold in these Rooms, 8 May 1996, lot 214; and a pair in The Hervouët Collection, part II, Sotheby's London, 3 November 1987, lot 829.
