Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the eagle surmounted by a coronet represents Louis XV of France and that the fish refers to Madame de Pompadour's maiden name Poisson. For further discussion and a similar pattern, see D. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, vol. II, p. 443, pl. 449.
