The prototype for this painting is signed and dated '1747' and was exhibited at the Salon in that year (no. 124) is recorded as in Versailles (see F. Ingersoll-Smouse, Joseph Vernet: Peintre de Marine 1714-1789, Paris, 1926, p. 50, no. 194, 'Port de mer: effet de matin', Château de Versailles).
