AN INDIAN MUGHAL IVORY HILTED DAGGER (KHANJAR)
LATE 17TH CENTURY
The tapering double-edged watered steel blade with pronounced medial ridge, each side with a cusped cartouche containing gold inlaid inscription, one which holds the owners name 'sahib Muhammad ibn Husayn' and the other with the makers name 'amal Akhni (?)' both cartouches extend into larger inscription panels with engraved invocations to God, the ivory hilt forming two naturalistically rendered and delicately carved lion heads with black inlaid eyes and whiskers, the sheath with silver locket and collar with cut arabesques and floral roundels, hilt and blade possibly associated
