Château Cheval-Blanc--Vintage 1981
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A)
Bin-soiled, loose, damaged and damp-stained labels. Levels into neck
Tasting Note: No problems here, no damning with faint praise, no excuses. First tasted in cask in September 1982. Very well on its tenth birthday: fragrant, powerful, attractive. A lovely graduation of colour, maturing well; good fruit and grip; slightly smoky taste, harmonius though rich tannin. Drinking perfectly at Christie's wine department's Christmas dinner the same year, and an impressive imperial: opaque core; sweet, good flavour, perfect weight, and a touch of iron. Dry finish. **** M.B.
