Paul Dubois (1829-1905) was greatly inspired by Michelangelo's sculpture of Lorenzo de Medici in the Medici Chapel in Florence, the figure was originally designed as a life-size bronze called Military Courage for the 1876 Lamorcière monument in the Nantes cathedral.

A related bronze is illustrated in H.W. Janson, Nineteenth Century Sculpture, New York, 1985, fig. 206.
