Lot Essay

Shahsavan weavings, exemplified by richly colored geometric designs, are more typically flat-woven and more commonly found as bag faces. Both the continuous latch-hook medallions and the syrva device border displayed in this unusual pile Shahsavan rug are motifs more frequently found on flat-woven bag faces. For a similar pile woven Shahsavan example using the syrva device please see James Opie, Tribal Rugs, Oregon, 1992, p. 259, pl. 14.11.
