Lot Essay

Many villages in the Arak region of central Persia had a thriving industry of carpet weaving at the end of the 19th century and the most notable area is Sultanabad. Ziegler & Co was responsible for some of the finest Sultanabad carpets of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This example typifies the strengths of Ziegler carpets. The soft, mellow colors and open field with vertical floral design are modifications of traditional Persian motifs and would have appealed to the firm's European clients.
