Cooper exhibited two large watercolours at the Royal Academy in 1871. One titled January in 1871, depicted sheep in a snowy winter landscape, the other, Evening in the Meadows, no. 771 is possibly the present watercolour. A contemporary review states that it '... represents one of those autumnal evening effects which the artist delights to paint and can paint so well- the musing cattle transferred with more than photographic faithfulness...'.

We are grateful to Kenneth Westwood for his help in preparing this catalogue entry. The present drawing is to be included in the forthcoming catalogue of the artist's work as [Westwood Cat: D.1871.3].
