A Satsuma style bowl, signed Matsumoto Hozan, Meiji Period (1868-1912)
decorated in typical enamels and gilt, the centre with tendrils containing textile designs issuing from the top rim and two square panels with a rural scene and another of sprays of blossoming flowers, the whole on a ground of butterflies, the reverse with two magnificent long tailed phoenix in flight against a background of stylised clouds, the base signed on a square reserve Dai Nippon Matsumoto Hozan Kyoto flanked by two feathers surrounded by clouds -- 6 1/8in. (15.5cm.) wide.
