The katana a robust honzukuri, slight suriage, length 71.4cm and even curve, the hamon suguha-cho with gunome-ba, details indistinct due to condition, the wakizashi honzukuri and o-suriage of length 49.2cm, deep curve, close ko-itame hada with bo-utsuri close to the edge, and tight suguha hamon with ko-maru boshi
Koshirae of black lacquer with later applied pigment, all metal fittings are matching, the tsuba round shakudo ishime-ji with cranes, bamboo grasses, and waves in high relief inlay with gold details, the fuchi-kashira with the same design, menuki on the katana gilt peonies, and on the wakizashi gilt cockerels, both kozuka and the kogai have shishi and peonies in high relief gold inlay on a shakudo nanako ground, the kogai signed Kikuoka Mitsutoshi (2)

Lot Essay

Omi Daijo Tadahiro (d.1673 aged 80 years) is the signature of the son of Tadayoshi I of Hizen, and second generation of the school. Following his fathers death in 1632, when he was 19, he assumed the name Tadahiro, and was granted the title Omi Daijo in 1641. The style of the signature suggests that this blade was made when he was of advanced age. Mitsutoshi (d.1863) was the son of Kikuoka Mitsumasa.
