SIGNED KANEFUSA, MOMOYAMA PERIOD (LATE 16TH - EARLY 17TH CENTURY)
A broad slightly suriage blade of shallow even curve with iori-mune, o-kissaki, tight itame-hada and a gunome hamon of nioi with some ko-nie and tobiyaki at intervals, the boshi midare komi of gunome with ko-maru return, the scabbard fine quality longitudinally ribbed dark brown lacquer, the metal fittings all matching (menuki missing) of iron with gold and silver nunome zogan design of clouds, the tsuba signed Yasujiro Kore Wo Tsukuru, and the fuchi signed Bunkyu Gannen Chusho [Mid Autumn 1861] Yasu no Saku [made by Yasu] and Shioda Keitoku (no) mottome (ni) Ozu [Made to the order of Shioda Keitoku]

Lot Essay

Although the signature is unusual the hamon is in the style of Kanefusa, and the faint file marks on the original portion of the tang are osujigai with some higaki in Mino fashion. Although details of the fittings maker are unknown, the existence of a set of matching fittings with clouds and dragons dated 1862 and signed Yasujiro is recorded in Toso Kinko Jiten by Takeshi Wakayama, Yuzankaku 1984.
