Lot Essay

Several generations of smiths signing Kanewaka followed the first, who originally came from Mino, and worked in Kaga Province from the Momoyama period onwards. The style of the signature on this sword is rather different from that of the early generations, and in the lack of sure comparative reference material it must be assumed to be a later generation, if not by an unrelated smith. However like many shinshinto swords, the blade is in the Mino style of the Kanewaka family ancestry.
