AN EGYPTIAN CARTONNAGE MUMMY MASK
ROMAN PERIOD, CIRCA 1ST CENTURY A.D.
Painted with polychrome over gesso, the face white, with elongated hieroglyphic eyes featuring large black irises, the brows blue, the corners of the eyes, the lips, nostrils and chin red, wearing a tripartite headcloth, a winged uraeus-flanked solar disk above the forehead, the lappets symmetrically arranged in registers, with falcon busts wearing solar disks, a cobra frieze, and (preserved on the left only) two facing falcons with their inner wings outstretched, pseudo inscriptional blocks above, with rows of geometric design including checkerboard pattern and rows of pseudo hieroglyphs, the sides of the head with decorative panels, the upper with facing falcons, the lower with jackal-headed Anubis anointing the mummified deceased who lies on a lion-form funerary bier, a splayed falcon with a solar disk at the back, the top of the mask with a Ba-bird at the center, a male figure above wearing a short kilt between two shrines, a frieze below with the Four Sons of Horus flanking an Apis bull
