Lee works with oil on Korean paper to create paintings of still life. In Brush (Lot 619), a brush used for traditional Chinese Calligraphy, autonomously and energetically applies thick lines of black ink onto a white background.

The textured and rough painterly strokes contrast the meditative qualities inherent to the brush and its traditional use. In his realistic execution, Lee creates a delicate balance between light and darkness, color and the absence of color. The resulting image stands as a metaphor for the harmonious co-existence of East and West. While the brush stands for Eastern traditions, the realistic style of the painting it self as well as the brush's Pollockesque brushstrokes, represent Western art characteristics. Lee's exquisite skill in the synchronization of the opposites of East and West culminates in an absolute state of tranquil harmony.
