Lot Essay

DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM THE DYNAMICS OF THE DAILY STREET LIFE OF KOREAN CITIES, PARK SANG HEE'S WORKS ARE FASCINATING IMAGES OF VIVID STREET SCENES. THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF HER WORK IS TO ATTACH LAYERS OF PLASTIC-ADHESION TO A CANVAS AND CUT IT ALONG A FORM WITH A KNIFE. SHE THEREBY CREATES A FEELING OF DEPTH THAT EMPHASIZES HER ARTISTIC DECONSTRUCTION OF THE CITY, WHILE USING ACRYLIC PAINT FOR FINER TREATMENT. IN HER WORKS, THE STREETS ARE A MELTED SYMPHONY OF COLOR, LIGHT AND MOVEMENT.



DAILY SCENERY - COBI ORIENTAL MEDICINE CLINIC (LOT 707) DEPICTS A BUSY MAIN STREET IN A BIG CITY. AN ENDLESS ROW OF CARS ARE STUCK IN A TRAFFIC JAM, GREEN, BLUE AND RED CAB LIGHTS ARE BLINKING AND ONE CAN ALMOST FEEL THE HECTIC MOVEMENT, HEAR THE NOISE OF BLOWING HORNS, THE BABEL OF VOICES, SMELL THE SCENTS OF POLLUTION, FOOD AND GARBAGE, AND BE BLINDED BY THE OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF NEON SIGNS. THE BUILDINGS, PEOPLE AND CARS BLEND IN WITH THE DARK NIGHT, LETTING THE BRIGHT TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND ILLUMINATED SIGNS ON THE BUILDING STAND OUT EVEN MORE. EXCEPT FOR A FEW BRAND LOGOS AND ADVERTISING LETTERING, THE SIGNS ARE AN UNIDENTIFIABLE MIX OF DIFFERENT SIZED SHAPES AND FORMS. THE LONG PERSPECTIVE VIEW OF THE STREET CREATES A NEVER-ENDING WAVE OF LIGHT. THE BLACK SHADOW OF HUMAN FIGURES EMPHASIZE THE FEELING OF ANONYMITY AND LOSS OF IDENTITY AND ONE IS ALMOST RELIEVED TO DISCOVER THE YOUNG MAN IN HIS BLUE SHIRT. PARK DELIBERATELY AVOIDS CLEARLY DEFINED CONTOURS AND SHAPES, CONSTRUCTING HER WORKS OUT OF ABSTRACT FIELDS AND FLECKS OF COLOR AND SCATTERED FINE LINES, TO REDUCE THE SCENE TO AN EXPRESSION OF ATMOSPHERE AND FEELING.



IN DAILY SCENERY - FRONT OF SHINSEGAE (LOT 707), PARK RECONSTRUCTS THE LARGE INTERSECTION IN FRONT OF SHINSEGAE. THE BUILDING ITSELF IS DEPICTED IN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CANVAS. THE ARTIST CREATES A SENSE OF BROADNESS, AS WELL AS DEPTH OF FIELD AND PERSPECTIVE THROUGH DIAGONALLY VECTORED, PARALLEL GROUPS OF CROSSWALKS ON THE LOWER HALF OF THE CANVAS. THE WHITE STRIPES ARE PAINTED ON A BLACK BACKGROUND, REFLECTING THE COLORS OF THE TURBULENT SCENE ON THE UPPER HALF OF THE CANVAS. ON THE LEFT SIDE, A WOMEN CROSSES THE STREET. THE PATTERNS OF HER CHECKED BLOUSE LEAVE TRACES OF HER PRESENCE ON THE WHITE CROSSWALK STRIPES. PAINTED AGAINST A DARK NIGHT SKY, THE LIGHT OF THE HIGH STREET LAMPS LOOK LIKE LITTLE ORANGE SUNS, SURROUNDED BY AN ACCUMULATION OF COLORS, CONSTRUCTING ABSTRACTED CARS, TREES AND CITY LIGHTS. DARK BLUE, CLOSELY DRWAN WAVY LINES INDICATE CLODY FUMES AND TAKE OVER THE PURE BLACK SKY. UNLIKE DAILY SCENERY - COBI ORIENTAL MEDICINE CLINIC, THIS WORK OF A CITY SCENERY SEEMS LESS CROWDED, LESS SINISTER AND OVERALL BRIGHTENED BY THE WHITE CROSSWALK STRIPES.



ALTHOUGH PARK'S WORKS ARE RELATED TO CITIES IN KOREA, HER UNUSUAL USE OF MATERIAL HELPS HER IN CREATING AN ATMOSPHERE THAT CAN ONLY BE FOUND IN A BIG CITY. THEREFORE, ANYONE WHO LIVES IN CITY CAN IDENTIFY WITH THE SCENERY.
