A RARE SCOTTISH ENGRAVED COW-HORN POWDER-FLASK
DATED 1709
Of characteristic flattened form, the inner-face engraved with a simple pattern of Celtic rondels, the outer-face cut with further rondels filled with differing patterns of Celtic interlace together with a recessed rectangle enclosing a mounted figure, all segmented by panels of differing border ornament, and crudely incised with the letters 'IF' together with the scratched date '1740', the upper edge drilled for suspension at the base and fitted with horn loop towards the nozzle, the lower edge incised with the owner's initials 'MM' and dated '1709', and fitted with base-plate of engraved bone (nozzle plug replaced).
