FIRST EDITION of Viviani's only work on engineering in which he discusses the flow of the Arno. As well as being court mathematician to Grand Duke Ferdinand de Medici, Viviani was also given the post of chief engineer with the Uffiziali dei Fiumi, a position he held for all of his life. It was Ferdinand who introduced Viviani to Galileo whose friend and disciple he became. Riccardi I (2), 627. 'Bel discorso'.
