AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION -- MUSIC. A collection of eight letters by composers and conductors addressed to Sir Thomas Beecham, and one manuscript by Beecham, comprising:
Ralph VAUGHAN WILLIAMS. Typed letter signed ('R. Vaughan Williams'), Dorking, 28 April 1949, excusing himself from attending a concert and supper in his honour, 'these long evenings and late suppers do not agree with my advancing years', one page, 4to;
William WALTON. Autograph letter signed ('William Walton'), 56a South Eaton Place, 12 October n.y., thanking Beecham for 'the excellent performance of Façade yesterday. It was all enjoyable, but I was particularly grateful for the slightly slower tempo & wonderful ensemble in the "Valse", which enabled me to pick out details in the score which I had more or less forgotten were there', one page, 4to (punch holes);
together with letters by Adrian Boult (one) and Malcolm Sargent (5), and an annotated typescript of Beecham's address at the funeral service of Frederick Delius, [24 May 1935], 4 pages, 4to, and photographs of Delius's birthplace and gravestone; all the items with the exception of the Delius address and birthplace photograph framed and glazed.
