THE FORTH RAIL BRIDGE -- A collection of photographs, manuscripts and printed material relating to the Forth Bridge and its construction, comprising:
PHOTOGRAPHS. A collection of approximately 85 sepia photographs laid down on card (including some duplicates) showing the Forth Bridge under construction, with a further group of photographs including a group portrait of the project's chief engineers;
Sir William ARROL (1839-1913, engineer on the bridge). Autograph letter signed to Adam Hunter, 8 October 1896, on visiting the bridge, 1 page, 8vo; presentation inscription in Philip Phillips, The Forth Bridge in its Various Stages of Construction (Edinburgh, 2nd edition, large oblong folio, blue cloth gilt); Sir William Arrol and Company, Bridges, Structural Steel Work, and Mechanical Engineering Productions (1909);
and other material, including two visitors books, containing signatures from September 1883 to September 1889, and from 1894 to 1901, the signatories including Ellen Terry (1887) and Colonel Wanchope who visited the bridge with Sir John Fowler in 1889, large 4to, half reversed calf; and a quantity of related printed material with a plan of Bridge House.
Perhaps the most celebrated of all railway bridges, the Forth Bridge was designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker and constructed by Sir William Arrol's company between 1883 and 1890.
