LORRAINE, Charles IV, Duc de (1604-1675). Autograph letter signed to the Duke of Bournonville, Paris, 6 March 1660, on achieving his freedom, about which he is confident his correspondent will be pleased: 'Jay trop de preuves de vostre affection pour doubter que ma Liberté ne vous ayt autant donné de Joye que vous auriez eu de desplaisir de ma detention'; he will send more information by Sieur Labbé, one page, 4to, integral address leaf, seal and remains of paper tie (the leaves stuck together at seal, small hole piercing both leaves and touching one word). Provenance: the Albin Schram Collection. Charles IV ruled the duchy of Lorraine in the periods 1624-34 and 1661-75, and abdicated in favour of his brother Nicolas II during the intervening years. In 1654 Charles was captured by the Spaniards at Antwerp, and imprisoned in Toledo where he was released in 1659. A great adventurer and inveterate intriguer, he commanded his army in the Low Countries where he refused to serve under the Prince de Condé. He served in both the Thirty Years War and the Franco-Dutch War.
