RUSKIN, John (1819-1900). Autograph letter signed ('J. Ruskin') to Mrs Collins, Paris, 21 September 1880, 2½ pages, 8vo (remnants of tape, some wear to margins).

A letter of sympathy to a distressed author: 'I have not forgotten you, although -- as often as I remembered, -- the thought of your difficulties and their cruel causes, made me still helplessly silent ... I am the last to tell any delicate woman she ought to live hardly: -- [though] many things I may have said against common idlers and useless luxury ...', offering to send a cheque for £20 at once to relieve her distress, and urging her to 'tell me what your new children's book is to be about, and write it as you would like to write it'.
