The auxiliary screw schooner Sunrise was designed and built by J.S. White at Cowes in 1877. Registered at 210 tons gross (142 net & 345 Thames), she measured 134 feet in length with a 24 foot beam and had a compound engine by J. Penn & Sons of Greenwich. Originally owned by Lord Ashburton, of Bath House, Piccadilly, she went through several changes of ownership after 1886 until, in 1906, she was re-rigged as a barque.
