AN ATTENDANT BRINGS ABISHAG TO DAVID, historiated initial 'E' on a leaf from a Bible, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[France, 2nd quarter 13th century]
191 x 136mm. Recto with 8-line initial showing an attendant bringing Abishag before David lying on his bed, the stave of pink with white decoration on a ground of burnished gold, two columns of 50 lines written in black ink in a small gothic bookhand between four verticals and 51 horizontals ruled in plummet, justification: 139 x 89mm, rubrics in red, running headings and chapter number in blue and red, 2-line initial in red flourished with blue on verso. The initial opens the book of Kings III, the text here running from Kings II, chapter 24, verse 2, to Kings III, chapter II, verse 4.
