ILLUMINATED INITIAL 'B' on a leaf from a choirbook, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[Spain, or Portugal, late 15th century]565 x 392mm, initial 190 x 195mm. Large initial opening the first Psalm ('Beatus vir qui non abiit in consilio impiorum'), with foliate stave incorporating two grotesque heads on a burnished gold ground, tooled and painted in gold, with the remainder of the word 'Beatus' in gold calligraphic script on a divided coloured ground, and accompanying foliate panel border. 13 lines written in a round bookhand in black ink, red and blue one-line initials (cropped with slight losses at inner margin, wear to lower margin).
