ON THE DEATH OF HIS FATHER. Thomas thanks the recipient for a letter of condolence on his father's death: 'My father had been suffering for a long time, and was nearly blind, but towards the end of his life he would often talk to me, with affection and humour, about his young days and his old friends. He died very peacefully'.

Jack Thomas had died on 16 December. Curiously, in view of the sentiments of his most famous poem, 'Do not go gentle into that good night', Dylan Thomas in his letters laid great emphasis on the 'peaceful' manner of his father's dying.
