FRANCUS, Jacobus (pseud.). [and:] ... Fastenmess 1598 - Herbstmess ... 1598. Wallstatt: 1598.
2 parts in one volume, 4° (187 x 148mm). 6 engraved folding plates in the first work and 9 in the second, including a double-hemispherical world map by Adam Elsheimer (c.1574-1620), woodcut tailpiece at end of 2nd work. (Early reinforcement on second title.) Contemporary vellum with yapp edges over thin pasteboard, blue edges.
An early newsbook, containing a RARE ELSHEIMER WORLD MAP. The map illustrates the voyage of Cornelis Houtman, the first Dutch expedition to the East via the Cape of Good Hope in 1595-98 (Shirley). It is generally known only from another work of 1598, Brenner's Continuator temporis quinquennalis.
The present work is a precursor of the newspaper and periodical, and relates contemporary historical events. It was published twice a year to coincide with the Frankfurt book fair in spring and autumn and therefore is generically known as a 'Messrelation'. The most famous were written by Conrad Lautenbach (1534-95) under the pseudonynm Jacobus Francus and the series was continued in the same name after Lautenbach's death, as here. Given the epoch, there is much news concerning the Turks. Engravings illustrate several events, such as the trading post at Bantam, Java, a beached "monster" fish, and the Turkish siege at Waitzen, Hungary, and include maps and plans of Prussia, Europe, Danzig, Brussels, and Neustadt. Shirley Mapping of the World 208, the Elsheimer map classified as very rare (RR); Map Collectors' Circle, ed. Tooley, no. 34, p. 30; Tooley, Dictionary, p. 19; VD-16 F-2246, F-2248.
